this photo shows baston ni san jose plants. they are also locally known as tungkod-pare. they are local shrubs that can grow up to 3 meters. they are characterized by their green to violet colored leaves that are crowded / arranged together towards the upper part of the stem. they are also considered as medicinal plants. in superstitions, locals believe that they can ward off evil spirits from their fields or houses. at present time, they are grown as ornamental plants.
